City Elections

Posted in accordance with H.B. 305 (September 1, 2019)

City elections are held the 1st Saturday in May of each year at City Hall located at 411 Tallowood Drive, El Lago, Texas 77586. The next upcoming election dates will take place on:

Saturday, May 7, 2029

Early Voting by personal appearance will be conducted each weekday between the hours of 8 am to 5 pm beginning the 12th day (April 20, 2026) through the 4th day (April 28, 2026) before Election Day at 411 Tallowood Drive, El Lago, Texas 77586.

Mayor & Council Positions

There are 6 elected positions in the city; 5 council member at large positions and the Mayor. In odd years, the Mayor and Council Positions 1 and 2 are up for election; and in even years Council Positions 3, 4 and 5 are up for election.

Filing for Office

In order to file an application for a place on the ballot, a candidate must:

1. Be a United States citizen;
2. Be 18 years of age or older on first day of term to be filled at election;
3. Not have been determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be:
   1. Totally mentally incapacitated; or
   2. Partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote:
4. Not have been finally convicted of a felony from which the person has not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities;
5. Have resided continuously in the state for 12 months and in the City of El Lago for six months immediately preceding the deadline for filing an application for a place on the ballot (for a write-in candidate, preceding the date of the election;) Mayoral candidates must have resided in the City of El lago for one year prior to election day.
6. Be a registered voter in the territory from which the office is elected as of the date of the filing deadline for a candidate’s place on the ballot (for a write-in candidate, as of the date of the election).

If you would like to run for office, candidate packets will be available for pick up at City Hall.  The first official day to file for office is January 14th, 2026 and the deadline to file is February 13th, 2026 at 5:00 PM.

Voting by Mail

The state of Texas provides that certain voters may apply to vote by mail. The Secretary of State’s form to apply for a ballot by mail is available at:

Any application received that is not on the State’s form is considered an “informal application” and may be accepted if it contains all the following information:

Section 84.001 prescribes the minimum requirements for an ABBM.  At a minimum, an early voting ballot application must be in writing and must include:

1. State the applicant’s name;
2. State the applicant’s address;
3. State the number of the applicant’s driver’s license or personal identification card issued by DPS, or if applicant has not been issued one of those numbers, the last four digits of the applicant’s social security number, or a statement that the application has not been issued either of those numbers;
4. State the address at which the applicant is registered;
5. State the address to which ballot is to be mailed, if different and if authorized by law;
6. State a valid reason for voting by mail;
7. Indicate the election for which the applicant is applying to vote by mail; and
8. Be signed by applicant or witness, if applicable.

An ABBM that does not contain these statutory elements must be rejected by the early voting clerk.

Applications for a ballot by mail received by mail, common or contract carrier, fax, or by electronic submission of a scanned application with an original signature may be received, provided that the original must be received by mail within four days of the receipt of the electronic submission, per the Texas Election Code.
